Why you NEED Magnesium

We all know the difference between wants and needs… I want those shoes ( as that voice say no you need them) I need to eat. Different right.. RIGHT!

Magnesium is a NEED not a want… but why?

This mineral is an electrolyte, helping regulate chemical reactions and fluid balance. It also plays a role in muscle and nerve function, healthy heart rhythm, blood glucose control ( sugar) and bone health.

The recommended daily magnesium intake varies based on age, sex, and pregnancy status. Here are the average daily amounts advised for most healthy individuals:

Male, ages 19–30          400 milligrams (mg)

Male, ages 31–50           420 mg

Male, ages 51+               420 mg

Female, ages 19–30     310 mg

Female, ages 31–50     320 mg

Female, ages 51+          320 mg

Pregnant women, ages 19–30                350 mg

Pregnant women, ages 31–50                 360 mg

Breastfeeding women, ages 19–30     310 mg

Breastfeeding women, ages 31–50     320 mg

How do we know we are low in magnesium?

There are clues that you’re not getting enough magnesium from your diet. Signs that you’re running low on magnesium include:

  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle cramps
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Headaches

Should I take a magnesium supplement?

YES! The best kind to take is something called bisglycinate. This magnesium is the most bioavailable and is easier absorbed by the body. What about citrate. Citrate also has its place within the magnesium umbrella…. but it should only be used as binders is supplements ( magnesium acts as a taxi cab in the body when combined with other supplements.. it takes the stuff where it needs to go) or as a laxative.

As my challenge to you exchangers, try to take your magnesium before bed  (about 1 hour)  and you  will have a more relaxed, deeper sleep.
