Aches and Pains – Senior Edition

Welcome to all my Senior citizen exchangers! I’m so happy you have stopped by today. I have such a respect for seniors… your wise wisdom and stories are such a blessing. I appreciate your guidance and life lessons you pass down.

Today we are talking about the aches and pains some of you may be experiencing, and safe, natural ways to help relieve them.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a distinctively flavored spice ( very earthy) that’s commonly used in Indian cooking… you now that bright yellow/orange color.. yup that’s Turmeric! Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that has been shown in studies to reduce pain caused by a wide number of conditions, This is because it helps the body flush inflammation out, which causes pain.

Turmeric is available in supplement form and as a tea. You can also buy turmeric as a powder or seasoning.

It may be most effective for pain relief when it’s mixed with black pepper.

Heat/Cold therapy

Heat wraps were shown in studies to soothe sore muscles and significantly reduce acute and sub-acute (longer term) pain ( in lower back and shoulder/neck).

Heat helps alleviate pain by opening up constricted blood vessels. The increase in blood flow is helpful for reducing joint stiffness caused by osteoarthritis and other chronic conditions.

In some instances, you may find that alternating heat and cold is the most effective treatment for you ( R.I.C.E anyone?)

Ice alleviates the inflammation, swelling, and pain caused by injuries such as muscle sprains and strains. It can also reduce the pain of tendinitis, bursitis, sciatica, and other conditions.

Applying ice at the onset of pain can be especially helpful. Try using an ice pack or package of frozen peas on and off for 20 minutes at a time.. and make sure you wrap the ice pack in a towel .

Arnica oil

Arnica oil is known for its pain-relieving properties. There’s evidence that it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Arnica is popularly used for helping with swelling and bruising. ….But be cautious with arnica. It’s toxic if ingested, and it can cause slight irritation in some people when used on the skin.

Chamomile Essential oil

There are several chamomile flowers. But two types –– Roman and German –– are commonly used in herbal teas and essential oils. They have different scents, but both forms of chamomile have pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and antidepressant properties.

A study found that chamomile improves joint function and osteoarthritis symptoms in the knee.

Lavender Essential oil

There’s a reason lavender oil is a go-to option for so many! The popular oil has been shown to provide pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and calming effects. In a small study, older adults with lower back pain got acupressure with lavender oil. After eight sessions, they experienced short-term pain relief.
